Itinerary

You’ll meet your JW tour leader at Koumoundourou Square.
Traveling through some of the most picturesque suburbs of Athens, your first stop will be Lake Vouliagmeni—a geological wonder formed around 2,000 years ago. Once a vast cavern, it collapsed following an  earthquake, creating a lagoon with unique environmental conditions. Its emerald waters are continuously replenished by underground thermal springs.

Next, a scenic drive along the stunning coastal road will bring you to a beautiful beach. Here, you’ll have time to relax, enjoy refreshments, and, weather permitting, take a dip in the crystal-clear waters.
Later, you’ll continue along the coastal road to reach the iconic Cape Sounion. Rising dramatically from the sea, this legendary site is steeped in myth. According to ancient legend, it was here that King Aegeus waited in vain for his son Theseus to return from Crete. Mistakenly believing his son to be dead, he leapt into the sea—giving the Aegean Sea its name.

Cape Sounion held deep significance for ancient Athenians. It was the last piece of homeland seen by departing sailors and warriors, and the first sight upon their return. For this reason, they chose this spot to build the Temple of Poseidon, dedicated to the god of the sea. Constructed in the 5th century BCE in Doric style, the temple was adorned with marble sculptures depicting mythological scenes, including Theseus’ battle with the Minotaur. The cliffs below drop a dramatic 60 meters (197 feet) into the sea.The temple’s stark, elegant columns have inspired many poets, including Lord Byron, who famously carved his name into one of them.

You may purchase an entrance ticket and explore the temple grounds independently. From this vantage point, you’ll enjoy some of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the Mediterranean. On a clear day, you can see at least seven islands, including Aegina, and even the mountains of the Peloponnese.

As the sun sets, the sky comes alive with every color of the rainbow before the sun sinks into the endless blue of the Aegean—offering an unforgettable moment and a perfect backdrop for photos.

After this unforgettable experience, you will return to Athens and be dropped off at Koumoundourou Square.
